Risk Assessments for a Private Estate

We have surveyed the trees of a private estate located in the countryside of Northamptonshire for many years. The estate covers an expanse of land over 8000 acres! The estate is home to a diverse range of mature trees, including Oak, Beech, Ash, Lime, some of which are likely over 200 years old.

The trees contribute to the estate's aesthetic value and biodiversity but they also pose potential risks to properties, residents, visitors, and the general public. Recognizing the importance of tree health and safety, the estate's management team commissions JF Tree Services to conduct comprehensive tree risk assessments to carry out their Duty of Care.

Objectives

The primary objectives of the tree risk assessments were to identify trees that may pose a risk of harm due to structural defects or disease when in close proximity to buildings, highways, pathways, and public areas. We evaluated the likelihood and potential consequences of complete or partial tree failure, categorising trees based on their risk levels. With this information we were able to give timescale appropriate recommendations for mitigating the identified risks, such as crown reduction works, pollarding, or complete removal of hazardous trees.

Outcome

The assessments on this estate usually identify high-risk trees, which were appropriately pruned or removed based on our recommendations. The estate now has a proactive tree management plan that balances safety with the preservation of its natural heritage. This approach not only improved safety but also enhanced the estate's landscape and biodiversity.
